UAE Introduces Mandatory Health Insurance for Employees and Dependents

In a move to enhance healthcare access for its workforce, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the implementation of a new mandatory health insurance policy starting next year. This policy will require all organizations and domestic workers in the UAE to provide health insurance coverage for their employees and their dependents.

The announcement by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) indicates that from January 1, 2025, companies in the northern emirates of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah will be required to obtain health insurance policies for their employees along with the issuance or renewal of residency permits.

This new initiative builds upon the existing mandatory health insurance schemes already in place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where employers have been responsible for providing coverage for their workers and their families. The expansion of this policy nationwide aims to ensure that all employees and their dependents in the UAE have access to quality healthcare services.

According to the authorities, the basic health insurance package will start at around 320 dirhams per year and will cover essential medical services, including hospital admissions, patient care, treatment, and surgery, with a 20% co-payment by the insured. Higher-tier plans with increased coverage and lower out-of-pocket costs will also be available.

The new regulations also address the healthcare needs of older individuals, stating that while the mandatory insurance will cover those up to 64 years of age, those above this age limit will need to submit medical reports to obtain coverage.

This comprehensive approach to healthcare provision is expected to benefit both employees and employers in the UAE. By ensuring that all workers and their families have access to necessary medical care, the government aims to promote the overall well-being of the country's workforce and contribute to a healthier and more productive society.
