New Basic Health Insurance Scheme for Workers in the UAE
The United Arab Emirates has recently announced a new basic health insurance scheme for private sector workers and domestic helpers in the northern emirates. This scheme will ensure that 100% of private sector employees are covered under health insurance.
The new scheme has an annual starting cost of as low as 320 dirhams. It covers individuals between the ages of 1 to 64 years, and those above 64 can enroll by filling a form and submitting recent medical reports. The scheme will be implemented in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah starting from January 1, 2025.
The basic insurance package includes direct treatment and surgery for those insured. The cost shall be borne by the policyholder at 20%. The insurance company shall reimburse the remaining 80% of the cost incurred to the patient. Outpatients, diagnostic tests, minor procedures, etc, on the other hand, include a cost that is also borne by the policyholder-25% of the same, but capped at 100 dirhams per session.
Under this insurance scheme, 7 hospitals, 46 clinics and medical centers, as well as 45 pharmacies are involved. All members of the family can even receive the same benefit package and the same rate stipulated under the insurance program.
The new insurance package will be available for purchase by employers through the Dubai Care network from January 1, 2025, or through other channels of the recognized insurance companies, including the website and mobile application of the insurance pool and business service centers around the country.
This health insurance scheme reflects the UAE's commitment to providing a comprehensive social protection system for all workers, including private sector employees and domestic helpers. It provides access to high-quality healthcare services and a dignified life for all.
