Abu Dhabi at the Forefront of Climate Change Battle
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has taken a giant leap forward in the fight against climate change with the launch of a new Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) program. The program will standardize and strengthen the tracking of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the emirate, thus bringing it into line with global best practices in climate action.
The MRV program forms a significant part of Abu Dhabi's more comprehensive efforts towards moving into a low-carbon economy and decarbonizing the emission-intensive sectors in Abu Dhabi. It also supports the goal that the UAE aims at: achieving net-zero emissions by 2050-a commitment that Abu Dhabi is set to deliver through innovative and proactive measures.
The MRV program will serve as a foundation for a potential carbon pricing mechanism in the future. This will help industries in Abu Dhabi align with international competitiveness and climate requirements, such as those set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement's Enhanced Transparency Framework.
EAD's secretary-general, Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri, said that this program will strengthen Abu Dhabi's position as a forward-thinking leader in climate action. The program will require large carbon-emitting facilities to monitor, report, and verify their emissions through third-party assessments, with the first reports due in 2026.
The MRV program was designed in collaboration with both public and private stakeholders to ensure coordination and synergy across the different sectors. Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, under-secretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, stated that the role of the program is crucial in bringing about transparency and trust to help effectively drive climate action.
The commitment of Abu Dhabi to climate change is laudable, and leadership in this area is good. The launch of the MRV program is one of the significant steps, as it will provide accurate data to track carbon emissions and enable development of more effective policies and strategies to reduce the emirate's environmental impact. This aligns with the UAE's broader vision of transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
