The Evolution of UAE National Day Celebrations

 


The UAE celebrates its National Day on December 2nd, commemorating the unification of the seven emirates in 1971. Over the years the celebrations have evolved, reflecting the country's growth and the increasing diversity of its population. Senior Emiratis have shared their memories of how the festivities have changed since the 1970s.



In the early days the celebrations were simpler but filled with patriotic spirit. Emirati families would gather in parks and public spaces, such as Abu Dhabi's Al-Dhifa Street now known as 2nd of December Street or the Heritage Village to enjoy traditional performances like Al Yola and Al Ayala. The streets were adorned with flags, lights, and pictures of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed.



As the years passed the National Day celebrations have become more elaborate and inclusive. While in the past there were few foreigners participating, now the festivities are a diverse mix of cultures. This has enriched the celebrations making it easier to introduce Emirati culture to a wider audience.



Emirati children have particularly fond memories of their school celebrations. They would perform dances form the largest human flag to enter the Guinness Book of Records and even present their shows in front of the Ruler of Sharjah. The children would dress in traditional Emirati attire, adorned with gold jewelry, and feel a sense of pride in representing their heritage.



Families have also embraced the National Day festivities organizing their own celebrations at home in the desert or on farms. These events are filled with activities traditional music and a strong sense of national unity. For many Emiratis, listening to patriotic songs before and after the National Day has become a cherished tradition.



The evolution of the UAE National Day celebrations showcases the country growth and the increasing integration of its diverse population. While the spirit of patriotism remains constant the celebrations have become more inclusive allowing Emiratis and residents alike to come together and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the UAE.
