Philippines explores nuclear energy partnership with UAE

The Philippines is looking to expand its energy options President Ferdinand Marcos Jr recently met with the head of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation to discuss potential cooperation on nuclear power.

The Philippines faces regular power outages and high electricity costs Most of its current energy comes from polluting coal To secure cleaner and more reliable power it wants to incorporate nuclear into the mix. Nuclear energy could meet the country rising demand which is forecast to increase significantly by 2040.

During the meeting, President Marcos said nuclear power has long been an option of interest He hopes to learn from the UAE experience and find ways to assist each other The UAE Barakah nuclear plant was the first in the Arab world and started operating in 2021 Philippines officials believe embracing nuclear can help satisfy power needs.

ENEC CEO Mohammed Al Hammadi also spoke to Marcos about opportunities for partnership ENEC oversees the UAE nuclear energy program and developed the Barakah plant Its success could provide a model for the Philippines entry into nuclear Both sides acknowledged potential benefits from technical cooperation on building nuclear capability.

Any deal would require thorough assessment and planning Safety and safeguarding are top priorities for any new energy source However nuclear may offer the Philippines an affordable low carbon alternative to fossil fuels if properly regulated Partnering with ENEC could help address concerns through lessons learned in the UAE.

In coming months discussions are likely to continue on specifics of collaboration The meeting signals the Philippines openness to introducing nuclear power with right international support It aims to strengthen energy security while cutting emissions in line with climate targets UAE involvement may facilitate this transition if risks are properly managed.
