Uae president and Bill gates discuss ways to enhance humanitarian cooperation

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, recently received Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates in Abu Dhabi. The meeting saw them discuss ways to enhance cooperation on important humanitarian issues and tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed and Gates reviewed potential partnerships between the UAE and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to jointly support developing countries and improve health, education and development opportunities around the globe. They explored collaborative initiatives that could build on the UAE's commitment to international development and humanitarian work as well as the Foundation's experience in implementing impactful programs.

Sheikh Mohamed and Gates emphasized the need for global cooperation and collective action to address issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic such as lack of access to healthcare, vaccines and other necessities in poor nations. They also spoke about collaboration to boost research and development for diseases that disproportionately affect lower-income populations. Supporting agricultural innovations and food security were other topics of discussion.

Being a world leader in foreign aid, the UAE has provided over $22 billion in development assistance to more than 150 countries since 1971. Meanwhile, the Gates Foundation is the largest private philanthropic foundation globally and has invested over $56 billion to date to reduce inequities and help people lead healthy, productive lives. A strengthened partnership would hopefully allow them to combine their respective strengths and resources to make a meaningful difference in improving lives and societies around the world.

The meeting underscores the UAE's commitment to leveraging partnerships with international philanthropic organizations and leveraging its soft power for global good. It also reflects the close personal relationship between Sheikh Mohamed and Gates in working jointly on humanitarian priorities. Their discussions no doubt explored impactful initiatives that could be undertaken through cooperation between the two entities.
