Sultan Al Jaber's Vision for an Inclusive and Just Energy Transition
As the COP28 President, Sultan Al Jaber stressed the massive scale of replacing the global energy system which currently consumes over 260 million barrels of oil, gas and coal daily. He recognized that transitioning to renewable energy will take time and happen at different paces in different parts of the world. Al Jaber emphasized ensuring energy security alongside sustainability during this transition.
Being an economist by training, Al Jaber understands the energy transition also presents a huge business opportunity. As the first Chief Executive to become COP President, he wants to leverage advanced technologies like energy efficiency improvements and artificial intelligence to help triple global energy capacity by 2030. This will help accelerate the shift to renewable energy.
Al Jaber stressed the opportunity of the energy transition far outweighs the challenges if approached responsibly. As the roadmap, the UAE Consensus provides the strategy but together the stakeholders attending COP28 must deliver concrete results. This includes efforts to transform energy efficiency and ensuring the Global South is not left behind in the renewables transformation.
Most importantly, Al Jaber wants to change the mindset around climate action. Instead of a burden, it should be seen as a massive socio-economic opportunity that makes both business and climate sense. Under his leadership as COP28 President, he aims to ensure an inclusive and just energy transition that benefits all regions of the world.
